The Quilting Party – Painting by John Biggers (1924-2001)

Commissioned by the City of Houston and donated by Susan and Maurice McAshan. The composition of the mural is symmetrical, with color and light placed to direct the eye to the triple focal points of the morning star, evening star and family unit. There is still a requisite shallowness to the spatial imagery but the work takes on an aerial perspective, as though the viewer were no longer earthbound. Biggers’ linear regularity has given way to a swirling feel of motion.  [ text source ]

Artist Statement

This exhibition began while working as artist in residence at the Dora Maar House in the historic village of Ménerbes in the south of France.  The concept of this installation—a meditation on my personal art icons—is a direct response to being surrounded by the incredibly rich history of working there in the studio used by both Dora Maar and her longtime companion, Picasso.

L’heure bleue refers to the blue hour between daylight and dark when colors are at their most intense and artists are most inspired.  This installation presents an intimate “musée d’homages” of memories and inspirations. Looking at the history of 20th century art, I have selected for re-presentation those works which are most revered as iconic in the canon of modern art history—Duchamp’s urinal readymade and Magritte’s pipe for instance.  I sculpt and cast objects using a diverse range of non-traditional materials that are carefully chosen for each.  The chosen media are conceptually integral to the object being explored: so, a smoking pipe made of paraffin wax or a bicycle tire made of glass will have layers of inherent meanings.  If ever used for their intended purposes they would be destroyed… artist website
